Picking the Right Summer Footwear for Your Bunion

Picking the Right Summer Footwear for Your Bunion

Summer in southern Florida means sandals, slides, and time spent outdoors, but if you have a bunion, the wrong footwear can quickly lead to pain and irritation.

At Florida Foot and Ankle Associates, Pritesh Patel, DPM, and our team regularly help our patients manage bunion discomfort, and one of the simplest ways to do that is by choosing the right shoes.

Understanding bunions

A bunion forms when the joint at the base of your big toe shifts out of alignment, creating a bony bump that can become inflamed and tender. While genetics and foot structure are involved, footwear choices can significantly impact how much discomfort you experience.

Tight, narrow, or unsupportive shoes often make symptoms worse.

Prioritize a wide toe box

When selecting summer footwear, one of the most important features is a wide, roomy toe box. Your toes should be able to rest naturally without being squeezed together.

Narrow sandals or pointed styles can increase pressure on the bunion and lead to more inflammation, so look for designs that give your forefoot space to breathe.

Look for adjustable support

Your feet can swell in the heat, especially in Florida’s climate. That’s why adjustable straps are so important.

Sandals with buckles or fabric fastener closures allow you to customize your fit throughout the day, helping reduce friction and pressure directly over the bunion. A secure, adjustable fit also keeps your foot from sliding forward.

Don’t skip arch support

Many popular summer shoes, like flip-flops and flat slides, offer little to no support. Without proper arch support, your foot mechanics can shift, placing added stress on the big toe joint.

We recommend choosing sandals with contoured footbeds or pairing your footwear with custom orthotics when possible to improve alignment and relieve pressure.

Keep heel height low

Higher heels and wedges may be fashionable, but they shift your body weight toward the front of your foot, increasing strain on the bunion.

For everyday wear, opt for low, stable heels (ideally no more than an inch or two) to keep your weight evenly distributed and reduce discomfort.

Choose soft, flexible materials

Materials matter more than you may realize. Soft leather or flexible fabric straps are typically more forgiving and less likely to rub against sensitive areas.

Avoid stiff materials or seams that sit directly over the bunion, as these can cause irritation or even skin breakdown.

Step into a more comfortable summer

At Florida Foot and Ankle Associates, we believe you shouldn’t have to sacrifice comfort to enjoy the season. Supportive summer footwear can go a long way in reducing bunion pain and helping you stay active.
