Avoiding Common Foot and Ankle Injuries When Trick-or-Treating

Avoiding Common Foot and Ankle Injuries When Trick-or-Treating

Halloween is filled with fun costumes, sweet treats, and spooky adventures, but all that excitement can also lead to unexpected foot and ankle injuries.

Whether you’re taking the kids from house to house or dressing up for a neighborhood party, your feet need to stay protected so you can end the night with candy instead of a trip to the doctor.

At Florida Foot and Ankle Associates in Boca Raton, Florida, our board-certified podiatrist, Pritesh Patel, DPM, offers his expert tips on how to keep you (and your little ones) safe and injury-free while trick-or-treating.

Choose supportive footwear

Costumes are fun, but flimsy or ill-fitting shoes can cause problems quickly. High heels, flip-flops, or slippery boots increase the risk of tripping, twisting an ankle, or developing painful blisters.

Instead, wear supportive, closed-toe shoes with good traction, like sneakers or sturdy boots. They can help protect your feet and provide the stability you need for walking on uneven sidewalks, driveways, or lawns.

Watch out for hazards

Trick-or-treating often means walking in the dark, which makes it harder to notice hazards like cracks in the pavement, tree roots, or uneven steps. Carry a flashlight or use glow sticks to help light the way.

Encourage your kids to take their time instead of running from house to house. This advice can help decrease their chances of falls and sprains.

Take breaks and check your feet

You can cover a lot of miles in a night of trick-or-treating, especially in larger neighborhoods. Take short breaks to rest your feet, and check for signs of irritation, like redness or blisters. If a shoe feels too tight or starts rubbing, adjust it before it causes a bigger problem.

Mind the weather

Humid October nights can make surfaces slippery, especially if there’s rain or dew. Choose shoes with nonslip soles, and watch your step on wet leaves (because they can be just as slick as ice).
